Africell has worked with the London School of Economics to pilot a new approach to executive training in The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Angola
Africell and LSE Generate, the entrepreneurship centre at the London School of Economics (LSE), designed a bespoke training programme for aspiring management candidates within Africell, focused on the topics of “intrapreneurship” and “empathetic leadership”. The programme also included outreach with local universities, startup accelerators, government departments and high schools, introducing LSE’s world class academic expertise to new audiences in Africa.
Africell and Sotheby’s celebrate and promote Africa’s creative economy
Africell has teamed up with Sotheby’s to shine a spotlight on Africa’s creative industries. In March 2024, Africell and Sotheby’s co-hosted an Africa-focused event in central London, with speakers including Idris Elba and other prominent curators, artists and journalists. In June 2024 an expert team from Sotheby’s will travel with Africell to DRC and Angola to engage with and build capacity in the local arts communities.
Africell and NBA Africa are expanding access to basketball in underprivileged Angolan communities
Africell and NBA Africa have a long-term partnership in Angola aimed at giving more Angolans – including, especially, young women – the facilities, freedom and encouragement to play basketball. Initiatives have included clinics, tournaments, training, and the opening of a state-of-the-art indoor basketball court in Luanda.
Casa Do Impacto joined Africell and LSE in delivering innovation training in Angola
Africell has worked with Casa Do Impacto, a social impact-oriented startup accelerator and business hub based in Lisbon, to give training to aspiring entrepreneurs in Angola. As part of the LSE Generate initiative in March 2024, an expert team from Casa do Impacto travelled to Luanda and gave training to Africell staff, government officials and members of the local startup community.
Afrimoney and USAID are investing in digital and financial literacy programs in Angola
In Angola, Africell and USAID are increasing financial inclusion in Angola by expanding access to mobile money. The collaboration (titled ‘Dinheiro Digital é Melhor’) aims to stimulate the growth of Angola’s mobile money ecosystem by recruiting agents and improving digital and financial literacy through educational campaigns, especially in rural communities.
Africell gives long-term financial and technical support to the national museum of the DRC
Africell is the principal corporate sponsor of the Musée National de la République Démocratique du Congo, plus its network of affiliated sites in other DRC cities (including Lubumbashi). Our work included helping to maintain and digitise its collections. In June 2023, Africell produced the DRC Pavilion at the London Design Biennale, which brought a virtual reality experience of the MNRDC to a live international audience of almost 50,000 people.
Africell and Media Matters for Women are giving women and girls better access to information in rural Sierra Leone
Since 2021, Africell has partnered with collaboration with Media Matters for Women, a non-profit with innovative projects in Sierra Leone aimed at using a smart combination of mini-podcasts and free file-sharing to provide rural women and girls vital information on human rights, health, education, politics and employment. Africell contribution includes digital connectivity and equipment, marketing support and logistical support.
Africell has collaborated with InnovarX, a US startup extending quality health screening in Gambia
Africell and Innovarx Global Health are trialling a solution to the problem of Gambia’s “physical activity transition” by offering free, easy-to-access preventative health screening for conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes, anaemia, obesity and malnutrition, as well as interactive public health and excerise workshops.
Africell produces original documentary with support from INEOS Automotive and The HALO Trust
Africell partnered with INEOS Automotive, The HALO Trust and Grammar Productions to produce an original, feature-length documentary about the Lobito Corridor, in which BAFTA_nominated British explorer Dwayne Fields travels by road, rail on foot on an epic 4,000km expedition from Dar Es Salaam to Lobito, getting under the skin of a region facing enormous economic change.
