In an interview with The Africa Report (October–December 2026 edition), Africell Angola CEO Jorge Vazquez set out the company’s ambition to become the country’s leading mobile operator.

“We want to be a disruptor,” said Vazquez, describing the strategy that has driven Africell’s growth since it launched in Angola in 2022. By offering data at a fraction of the standard market rate, Africell brought mobile services within reach of millions of Angolans for the first time, with around 40% of its early customers previously unable to afford them. Africell Angola now serves 8.1 million subscribers, around half of the group’s customers across its four markets.

The next phase of growth will see Africell expand into seven more provinces over seven months, including Zaire, Namibe, Bié and Cabinda, as it works towards nationwide coverage. The expansion is supported in part by a $100m loan from US Exim Bank, building on $150m in earlier US government funding.

Alongside its consumer network, Africell is growing its enterprise offering through Africell Business, which now operates separately from the mobile business and serves sectors including mining, critical minerals, agriculture, transport infrastructure and projects linked to the Lobito Corridor. Services include secure connectivity, cloud solutions, fibre and managed communications, with satellite and geospatial services under consideration for smaller municipalities.

Vazquez told The Africa Report that group revenue now stands at around $500m. To strengthen its resilience to currency movements, Africell has renegotiated around 50 contracts and is making greater use of locally supplied services.
