Africell is playing a leading role in reimagining education in The Gambia through its sponsorship of the country’s first national Preparation of Teachers (PoT) Training Workshop. Held from 11–14 September, the workshop trained 50 Gambian teachers to use chess not only as a game, but as a tool for problem-solving, focus, and creativity in the classroom.

Organised by Chess in Gambia Schools and Communities with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the FIDE Chess in Education Commission, and The Gift of Chess, the program was supported heavily by Africell and co-funded by local communities. Trainers included Woman International Master Anzel Laubscher, one of the world’s top chess education specialists, and Christina Aziz, who has been pioneering chess in Gambian schools.

Africell’s CEO, Hussein Diab Ghanem, explained: “Education is a cornerstone of the Africell Impact Foundation, and this program reflects what we stand for: innovation, inclusion, and empowerment. By investing in teachers, we invest in thousands of students and in The Gambia’s future.”

The success of the PoT Training Workshop shows the power of partnerships. Teachers left equipped with world-class skills, and The Gambia is now firmly on the global chess map. Africell’s support ensures that chess is not just a pastime but a driver of opportunity and ambition for Gambian youth.
